hosts file hacked?
It said to go to my host file and remove the entries. I went to my host file and found the entries below had been added. Has anyone else seen this? Where does it originate from? The best test to see if hosts is working is have IIS installed and a hosts file with just this in it: (made in Notepad hosts no extension) 127.0.0.1 localhost Then try http://localhost and see if you get your IIS server. If so hosts is working. -- George Hester

I use HOSTS to prevent access to known sites and manage it with HostsMan (http://www.abelhadigital.com/). However, if you decide to use HostsMan, don't fall into the trap of installing every site. Too many entries in your HOSTS file is a disaster on PC performance. I use only the MVPS HOSTS file.

SAM is a sample file. The live file is simply HOSTS without any extension. 127.0.0.1 is a special IP address that refers to the same computer (localhost). In TCP/IP terminology, each computer attached to the network is a HOST. You don't normally need to include this entry in the HOSTS file.

If so, Windows will first look in the hosts file to see if you defined a lookup there before querying Could be the sites that you are trying to get at are listed in the hosts file (and probably equating to 127.0.0.1 or localhost).
